Artificial intelligence and machine learning are changing how people analyse data, support decision-making, and solve complex problems. In this module, you will learn the core ideas behind intelligent systems and how they can be applied in practice.

You will begin with a short introduction to databases and SQL, gaining practical experience of how data can be stored, queried, and prepared for analysis. You will then explore the fundamental concepts of artificial intelligence, including how the subject has developed over time and how AI systems use search, planning, learning, and constraints to solve problems. You will also be introduced to the basics of machine learning and deep learning, exploring how algorithms can identify patterns and support predictions.

Through project work, you will apply ideas from the module using AI and machine learning tools, while developing your ability to work independently and communicate your results clearly.

By combining databases, AI concepts, machine learning methods, and practical programming tools, this module helps you understand how intelligent systems are built, how they learn from data, and how data-driven methods are used in modern technology.

What you will learn

In this module, you will:

  • learn basic database concepts and use SQL for simple queries
  • explore the history and fundamental principles of artificial intelligence
  • study AI methods for search, planning, learning, and constraint-based problem solving
  • examine the basics of machine learning and deep learning
  • use popular libraries for AI and machine learning development
  • apply AI and machine learning methods through project work.

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  • describe the basic structure of databases
  • use SQL to carry out simple queries
  • explain key AI concepts and how the field has developed
  • apply AI problem-solving methods to structured tasks
  • explain how machine learning techniques can be used in practical settings
  • evaluate recent developments in artificial intelligence and machine learning
